In the late 1800's, a scientist by the name of Ignacio Dubois was known around France as a quiet genius, finding cures for diseases and common ailments, but he often kept to himself in a house on a hill not far outside of the town he lived near. One day after traveling to the town to get supplies, he met a woman named Marie and was enthralled by her. He traveled to the town often after that, running into her more and eventually getting close enough to fall in love. After having their son, Dominic, and Marie almost losing her life, Ignacio was determined to keep that from ever happening again. Having never been this close to and caring this much for someone before, his worries of losing her were beginning to take over his thoughts and eventually, he became obsessed with the need to keep her alive and around him forever. Testing experiments on animals in his basement lab, and in the end, concluding they weren't good enough subjects, he moved on to human test subjects. Spending countless hours and even days in his labs, he let the diseases and ailments of the town pile up and couldn't be convinced to leave his lab. After his son had reached the age of five, Ignacio had thought he finally found some type of life-prolonging drug after he injected a subject and had left his lab without much of a bad reaction, however, he wasn't aware that hours later his subject had experienced a rather horrifying death in his home. Eager to prolong his wife's life, he convinced her that the drug worked and that if she took the drug, she could have as many more children that she wanted without the threat losing her life. Trusting her husband, he injected her in his lab, Dominic watching secretly from the top of the stairs. Minutes after the injection, something was obviously going wrong when she began to scream out in agony, her insides felt like they were on fire, blood came out of every hole and it wasn't until after she had died within seconds that he realized he had melted her body from the inside out. Having witnessed everything, Dominic fled the house and ran to town, alerting everyone of what his father had done and was captured and hung days later.

Dominic was adopted by his mother's friend and grew up far from his family home. The day he watched his father hang for his crimes was the day he went quiet, living for years as a mute into his late teens. Meeting a outgoing woman after turning nineteen, Samantha was the first one to show kindness and interest in the quiet young man and eventually, he starting speaking again, but only to her. They married a year after meeting and had two children, a son named Brandon and a daughter named Abigail. After Dominic's quiet and awkward behavior lost its luster for Samantha, she began going out more often, in which Dominic grew suspicious of. Following her one night, he found her at a pub in the lap of another man, talking and laughing and he was convinced that he wasn't what she wanted. He'd grown mute again after his discovery which only made their relationship worse, Samantha starting arguments and fights until one night, a fight got out of hand. He was pushed to the edge after she threw insult after insult at him and when he finally broke, he grabbed a knife and fought her to the ground, cutting out her tongue and watching her bleed out on the floor. Without realizing his children had been watching from the doorway of their bedroom, he looked over to see Brandon holding a different knife, standing in front of his cowering sister and Dominic knew he'd never get their trust back. Dominic dropped the knife and simply turned around and left the house, never returning and never being heard from again.

Brandon and Abigail were sent to America to be taken care of by a sister of Samantha's, Mauve, although they didn't get the attention that young children needed. They were often alone together or banished away to their rooms while Mauve had elaborate parties, only taking in the children to get whatever inheritance they would receive when they turned eighteen but ignoring every other need they may have. Her parties, however, grew dark when wandering drunk men would accidentally stumbled into one of their rooms and abuse the children without Mauve knowing. Years of abuse into their teen years, Brandon's many failed attempts of getting him and his sister out of the house drained them both and their hope of having a normal life flew out the window. Unable to withstand any more of the abuse, Abigail took her own life. Now completely alone in the world, Brandon continued to live with his Aunt Mauve until he turned eighteen. He found out that a few weeks prior to Abigail's suicide, Mauve had taken out a life insurance policy on her and Brandon, resulting in her getting money from Abigail's death and he assumed she had taken one out on him, as well. Abigail's inheritance had been given to Brandon, unable to be taken by Mauve, and he had figured out that she was waiting for him to get their inheritance before she would soon attempt to take his life and make it look like a suicide as he assumed she had done to Abigail. However, before she could ever carry out her plan, he choked her to death in her sleep, then made it look like a suicide by hanging her in the attic.

Brandon went on to inherit his Aunt's home, later meeting a woman named Alicia in his early twenties and they married soon into dating. They had three children, the eldest, a son named Marrick, and his two younger twin sisters, Cindy and Ceelia. For years, the family lived a good life on the outside, but within the home, Brandon drank heavily, was easily angered, and abusive towards his children. It wasn't until Marrick was around the age of twelve that things got worse. Alicia's father passed away and her mother received money from his life insurance policy, Alicia's mother suggested that god-forbid, anything should happen to any of them, their children or the spouse would be taken care of. Alicia took her mothers advice and took out insurance policies on herself and Brandon should anything happen to either or both of them. However, when Brandon found out what she had done, his life with his Aunt Mauve he had somehow hidden away came rushing back into his mind and quickly assumed Alicia had the same intentions. Cindy and Ceelia, home from school sick and Alicia taking care of them, Marrick went to school. Thinking that Alicia had the intention of throwing everything they had built together away and wanting to murder her family, Brandon decided to act first. Walking the few blocks home from the school at the end of classes, Marrick came through the front door to find the wooden floors covered in blood, straight down the hallway in the kitchen were his two sisters lying on the floor, and to his left, his mother lay in the living room gasping to breath as she tried to crawl to the door. Marrick went to his mother and held her as she used her last breath to tell him his father was in the backyard about to return and to run far, far away.

Marrick ran away from home, falling under the same kind of silence Brandon had and he lived on the streets a state over. Finally being picked up by an orphanage a year later, he silently lived out his teen years there until he turned eighteen and was once again on his own. Marrick never saw his father again and he wasn't even aware if his father was still alive. He had spent the majority of his life staying hidden, living in a subconscious fear of him and living in a way that would make it almost impossible for Marrick to be found. Not unless he wanted to be. He didn't dig into his past and he didn't have any friends or very many acquaintances, he simply just kept to himself and he was completely content with living a life alone.
